Ich hasse es, wenn mir Bücher aufgedrängt werden. Sei es durch Bekannte, durch Freunde, durch die Presse, durch einen unvorstellbaren Hype. Nein, ich wollte Harry Potter nicht lesen. Das Hörbuch mit Rufus Beck habe ich über Monate hinweg in kleinen Einheiten gehört (beim Straßekehren: Eine halbe Platte. Pause. Die nächste halbe Platte. Ich haße Kehren.) Den Film habe ich zweimal gesehen.

Aber das Buch wollte ich nicht lesen.

Und dann finde ich das englische Original bei Oxfam. Also hab ich's gekauft. Für schlechte Zeiten, wenn ich mal absolut kein anderes Buch zu lesen habe. Und ich hab's ein halbes Jahr liegen lassen.

Auch wenn mir der Inhalt bekannt ist, auch wenn ich durch Rufus Beck eine Vorstellung habe, so schrecke ich vor Fantasy doch zurück.

Und dann hat es mich gepackt - obwohl etliche andere Bücher von anderen (bewährten) Autoren auf die Lektüre warten.

Fünf Tage. Ich habe fünf Tage dafür gebraucht.

Das Buch liest sich hervorragend. Es ist einfach genug geschrieben, um Kinder anzusprechen, tiefgründig genug, um für Erwachsene nicht langweilig zu werden. Man kennt es und erkennt es im Film wieder. Es gibt einige kleinere Dinge, die es nicht in den Film geschafft habe, der der Vorlage erstaunlich ähnlich geblieben ist.

Das Hörbuch mit Rufus Beck kann als Klassiker bezeichnet werden. Das Buch in Papierform, noch dazu in der Originalsprache ist noch viel besser.

Es ist spannend (auch wenn man die Lösung kennt), es ist witzig - und am Schluß ist es richtig schön sentimental. Wenn Hermione die Freudentränen in die Augen schießen, kann es durchaus sein, daß der Leser mit ihr um Fassung ringt.

Ein Buch, nicht um Zauberei (ja, auch, aber das ist nicht das wichtigste), ein Buch um Freundschaften, ein Buch um Sehnsucht nach Elternliebe, ein Buch über die Suche nach Anerkennung.

Ein Buch für Kinder und für Erwachsene.

Keine große Literatur, nein, das nicht. Aber ein Buch, das den Erfolg verdient, den es hatte. Weil es nicht langweilt, weil es immer unterhält.

I hate it when books are forced on me. May it be by friends, by the press, by an inconceivable hype. No, I did not want to read Harry Potter. I have heard the audio-book with Rufus Beck in small segments (while sweeping the street: a half plate. Break. The next half plate. I hate sweeping.) I have seen the film twice.

But I did not want to read the book.

And then I find the English original at Oxfam. So I have bought it. For bad times when I have absolutely no other book to read. Half a year goes by.

Even if the contents are known to me, I nevertheless don't like fantasy.

And then it caught me - although several other books of other (proven) authors wait for the reading.

Five days. I needed five days.

The book reads very well. It is written simply enough to appeal to children, profound enough not to become dull for adults. One knows it and recognizes it in the movie. There are some smaller things that are missing in the movie.

The audio-book with Rufus Beck can be called a classic. The book in paper form, on top of that in its original language still is superior to it.

It is exciting (even if one knows the solution), it is witty - and at the end it is really nicely sentimental. When Hermione shoot the tears of joy in the eyes, it is possible that she takes the reader with her.

A book about magic (yes, also, but this is not most important), a book about friendship, a book about longing for parental love, a book about the search for recognition.

A book for children and for adults.

No big literature, no, that it is not. But a book, that earns its success.

Zu diesem Buch hat man mich nicht zwingen müssen. Ich wollte es lesen.

Auch diesmal wurde ich nicht enttäuscht. Der Handlungsablauf ähnelt dem ersten Buch, aber Harry hat sich verändert. Er ist nicht mehr so unsicher wie im ersten Buch. Er akzeptiert seine Rolle, ohne überheblich zu werden. Mit Gilderoy Lockhart bekommt er einen Spiegel vorgehalten. Wo Harry tapfer ist, ist Lockhart feige, wo Harry bescheiden ist, ist Lockhart angeberisch.

Hauptthemen des Buches sind Freundschaft und Toleranz. Probleme lösen sich dadurch, daß man sich anderen gegenüber öffnet. Harry bekommt Probleme, solange er nicht über die Dinge redet, Ginny verschweigt ihre Gefühle und erzeugt dadurch Probleme.

Die Kammer der Geheimnisse (deutsch schlecht übersetzt als Kammer des Schreckens) ist nicht nur ein Raum in Hogwarts, sie ist auch das menschliche Herz.

Ein in jeder Hinsicht bezauberndes Buch.

One hadn't to force me to this book. I wanted to read it.

Again I wasn't disappointed. The sequence of events resembles the first book, but Harry has changed. He isn't as unsafe any more as in the first book. He accepts his role, without being arrogant. With Gilderoy Lockhart he gets a mirror reproached. Where Harry is courageous, Lockhart is cowardly, where Harry is humble, Lockhart is braggart.

Main topics of the book are friendship and tolerance. Problems are solved by opening towards others. Harry gets problems, as long as he doesn't talk about things, Ginny hides her feelings and thereby generates problems.

The chamber of the secrets (translates in German badly as chamber of the fright) not only is a space in Hogwarts, it is also the human heart.

Enchanting in every regard.

Mein Geschenk zu Ostern 2011. In einer Woche gelesen. Und am Schluß eine Träne zerdrückt.

Das Buch ist anders als die anderen. Aber er ist nicht schlechter als seine Vorgänger, ja, er ist mindestens genauso gut vielleicht sogar besser.

Frage um Frage wird beantwortet. Charaktere, die wir seit langem gehaßt haben, erhalten plötzlich gute Seiten.

Es ist vorbei. Harry Potter ist vorbei.

Für immer? Ich bezweifle es. Rowling wird früher oder später feststellen, was schon viele Autoren feststellen mußten: die Figuren wollen weiterleben. Vielleicht wird sie den nächsten/die nächsten Roman(e) nur für sich schreiben. Aber irgendwann heißt es: Harry Potters Rückkehr. Die von ihr geschaffene Welt ist einfach zu reich um jetzt zu verschwinden. Und Rowling hat mit dem letzten Kapitel gezeigt, daß sie sich über das weitere Schicksal ihrer Charaktere Gedanken gemacht hat. Da ist es nur noch ein kurzer Weg bis zur Tastatur.

The book is different than the others. But he is not badder than his predecessors, yes, maybe it's better.

Nearly every question is answered. Characters we have hated for a long time suddenly receive good sides.

It is over. Harry Potter has ended.

For good? I doubt it.

Ich bekam das Buch am 14.02.11 geschenkt. Eine Woche später war ich durch. Ich habe es regelrecht verschlungen.

Natürlich, es ist mehr vom selben. Der Aufbau ist recht phantasielos: Viel Schulalltag, dann kurz vor Schluß ein Wechsel der Szenerie mit sehr viel Action. Aber darauf kommt es gar nicht an. Wie in den anderen Büchern, läßt Rowling ihre Figuren leben. Das komplizierte Verhältnis von Ron und Hermione wird noch komplizierter, weil die beiden über lange Strecken nicht mehr miteinander reden, Harry entdeckt seine Gefühle für Ginny, Hagrid verschwindet fast im Hintergrund, Dumbledore gewinnt noch mehr Tiefe, Snape wird noch unsympathischer ... und obwohl der Roman in der mir vorliegenden Ausgabe mehr als 700 Seiten umfaßt, bleibt das Gefühl, daß er auch noch dreihundert Seiten mehr verkraftet hätte.

Man spürt, daß der Roman den Weg für den letzten Band bereitet, hat aber nicht das Gefühl, nur einen Zeitschinder gelesen zu haben.

I got this as a gift on February, 14th 2011. One week later I finished it. I have properly devoured it.

Of course, it is more of the same. The construction is rather unimaginative: A lot of school everyday life, then shortly before end a change of the scenery with a lot of action. But it does not depend on it at all. As in the other books, Rowling allows her figures to live. The complicated relation of Ron and Hermione still gets more complicated because they do not talk with each other, Harry discovers his feelings for Ginny, Hagrid disappears almost in the background, Dumbledore wins even more depth, Snape becomes even more unpleasant ... and although the novel in this editon is more than 700 pages long, that it would not be boring with additional 300 pages.

One feels that the novel paves the way for the last issue.

Den dritten Band habe ich eine Woche nach Band 2 begonnen.

Das große Thema ist hier: Traue nie dem ersten Eindruck.

Sirius Black ist nicht der Verbrecher, als der er erscheint.

Crookshanks ist nicht die mörderische Katze, die wir in ihr vermuten.

Die Hinrichtung von Buckbeak stellt sich später als etwas ganz anderes heraus.

Snape ist wieder einmal anders als man denkt.

Und so weiter.

Auch an der Vorgeschichte von Harry wird weiter gearbeitet.

Alles hat einen Bezug zu allem, ist so ineinander verschachtelt, daß man das ohne gründliche Vorabplanung nicht bewältigen kann. Wohl einer der Gründe, warum Rowling nur ein Jahr zum Schreiben benötigt hat.

Das Buch ist viel besser als der Film, weil die Figuren vielschichtiger sind, weil die Handlungen nachvollziehbar sind, weil Harry und seine Freunde zwar noch Kinder aber doch schon auf dem Weg zu Erwachsenwerden sind, was Rowling glaubhaft schildert. Und es ist besser als der Film, weil es den vertrauten Nebenfiguren sehr viel mehr Platz einräumen kann.

Ich für meinen Teil bin gespannt auf Buch Nr. 4 (das noch nicht in meinem Besitz ist).

The big subject is here: Never trust the first impression.

Sirius Black isn't the criminal as whom he appears at first.

Crookshanks isn't the murderous cat we think.

Once again Snape is different than we suppose.

Et cetera.

Harry's origin is further developed.

Everything related to all, anything is interlaced that the author needed very thorough advance planning. Probably one of the reasons, why Rowling has needed only one year to the writing.

The book is much better than the movie because the figures are more complex because the actions are understandable because Harry and his friends are though still children, however, on the way to growing-up what Rowling describes plausibly. And it is better than the film because it can show more of the supporting characters.

I can't wait for book No. 4 (which isn't yet in my possession).

Nach der Lektüre des 3. Bandes hat es fast ein halbes Jahr gedauert, bis ich den vierten Band in die Finger bekam.

Ein Wälzer, ein dicker, dicker Wälzer. Fast dreimal so umfangreich wie der erste Band. Aber Rowling gelingt das Kunststück, den Leser nicht zu langweilen. Ich habe zwei Wochen an dem Buch gelesen - und konnte es dabei kaum aus der Hand legen.

Vordergründig ist natürlich das Triwizard-Turnier das wichtigste am Buch.

Weil die Figuren älter werden, unterliegen sie auch Entwicklungen - und das darzustellen gelingt Rowling ganz hervorragend.

Es geht zum einen um die Entwicklung der Freundschaft der drei Hauptpersonen. Ron ist eifersüchtig, weil Harry immer im Mittelpunkt steht. An dieser Eifersucht zerbricht fast ihre Freundschaft.

Es geht zum anderen um die Entdeckung des anderen Geschlechts. Hermione verliebt sich in den Quidditch-Spieler, Viktor Krum, Ron reagiert auf den zuvor bewunderten Viktor mit heftiger Eifersucht und Harry schaut sich immer öfter nach Sabine ... nach Cho Chang um, ohne den Mut aufzubringen, sie anzusprechen.

Die Aufgaben des Triwizard-Turniers zeigen, daß Harry ehrlich und selbstlos ist. In der 2. Aufgabe versucht er alle Gefangenen zu befreien, nicht nur seinen Freund Ron, nach der 3. Aufgabe will er den Gewinn nicht, stimmt dann zu ihn zu teilen - was für den Mitschüler fatale Folgen hat.

Nach der die erwartete Konfrontation mit Voldemort beendet Rowling nicht die Erzählung sondern sie bereitet den nächsten Band vor. Das Buch wird von Kapitel zu Kapitel immer düsterer, räumt den Nebenfiguren sehr viel Platz ein, ohne die Hauptpersonen zu vernachlässigen und selbst wenn man den Film (und damit die Auflösung) kennt, wird man hier immer noch etwas Neues entdecken.

Rowling ist wieder einmal ein großer Wurf gelungen.

Six months after the 3rd book my wife gave this book to me.

A huge tome, a thick, thick tome. Nearly three times longer than the first volume. But Rowling manages the trick not to bore the reader. I needed only two weeks to read the book.

On first sight the Triwizard tournament is the most important part of the book.

Because the figures become older, they develop - and Rowling succeeds quite very well in showing this.

It is, on the one hand, about the development of the friendship of the three central figures. Ron is jealous because Harry stands always in the center. Because of this jealousy their friendship almost ends.

It is on the other hand about the discovery of the other gender. Hermione falls in love with Viktor Krum, a Quidditch player, Ron reacts to the before admired Viktor with jealousy and Harry more and more often looks around for Sabine ... for Cho Chang without raising the courage to speak with her.

The duties of the Triwizard tournament show that Harry is honest and unselfish. In the 2nd task he tries to release all prisoners, not only his friend Ron, after the 3rd task he wants to share the prize with Cedric - with fatal results.

After that the expected confrontation with Voldemort Rowling does not finish. Instead she prepares the story for the next volume. The book becomes more and more somber from chapter to chapter, puts away a lot of place for the supporting characters without neglecting the central figures and even if one knows the film (and with it the resolution), one will still discover something new.

Rowling has topped herself again.

Den vierten Band bekam ich zu Nikolaus, den fünften zu Weihnachten und an Neujahr war ich durch. Das will was heißen, denn der Band ist viermal so umfangreich wie der erste Band - und ist auf keiner Seite langweilig.

Wie im vorherigen Band gesehen, ist Voldemort zurück. Der Orden des Phoenix sind Zauberer, die sich auf Harrys bzw. Dumbledores Seite dem Herrn des Bösen entgegensetzen.

Bereits im letzten Band hat sich abgezeichnet, daß unangenehme Wahrheiten in der Politik nicht beliebt sind. Das hat heftige Auswirkungen auf Hogwarths. Dort wird mit Dolores Umbridge eine Person installiert, die dafür sorgen soll, daß vermeintliche Lügen nicht um sich greifen.

Rowling zeigt hier beispielhaft wie aus anfänglich nachvollziehbaren (aber für den Leser als falsch erkennbaren) Gründen ein faschistisches System geschaffen wird, da nur zusammenbricht, weil sich die Wahrheit in diesem Fall irgendwann nicht mehr verbergen läßt.

Wie zuvor räumt Rowling den Nebenfiguren viel Platz ein und läßt sie sich entwickeln. Man merkt, daß nichts sicher ist, daß Menschen vielschichtiger sind, als man manchmal wahrhaben möchte. Besonders auffällig ist das bei - wieder einmal - bei Snape und erstaunlicherweise auch bei James Potter, der nicht der Heilige war, den Harry (und wir) gern in ihm sehen will. Eltern sind eben auch Menschen, mit positiven und negativen Seiten. Rowling macht deutlich, daß man ihnen nicht gerecht wird, wenn man eine Seite ausblendet (meist wohl die negative - bei mir eher die positiven Seiten, die auch meine Eltern sicher hatten).

Wie immer ein ganz hervorragendes Buch, das Appetit auf mehr macht.

I got the fourth volume on St. Nicholas' Day, the fifth on Christmas and finished it on New Year's eve. The book is four times the length of the first one - and is never boring.

As seen in the last book, Voldemort is back. The Order of the Phoenix are wizards who side themselves with Harry and Dumbledore to fight the lord of evil.

Politicians do not like the disagreeable truth. This has serious consequences on Hogwarth's. With Dolores Umbridge a person is installed to fight perceived lies.

Rowling shows exemplarily that how a fascistic system is created, that only breaks down because here the truth cannot be hidden.

As before Rowling puts gives a lot of space to the development of the supporting characters. People are more complex than one would sometimes like to admit. This is especially remarkable - once again - with Snape and surprisingly also with James Potter who was not the saint for whom Harry (and the reader) wants to see in him. Parents also are people, with positive and negative sides.

As usual, quite an excellent book which makes appetite for more.
